I thought we'd start out by taking a quick inventory of things I currently own, so we can see what is really needed. Below are items currently in my living room. What do you see? I'll tell you what. A whole lot of NO COLOR AT ALL. This is when, as a designer, I say "Self, WTF?"

And below are a few snapshots of my living room, so you can see what we're working with. The white wing chair is one of a pair, you can see them together below. They need pillows! The antique Beni Ourain carpet came back with me from Morocco last year, so she's a keeper.

Antique trunk I purchased in college, I still love this.

My feet are on it right now, actually.

Don't laugh, that sofa is being replaced by the pretty camel back sofa up top next Friday. The main attraction here are the sconces, original to the house, which have been (woefully) painted over. Who does that?? There are a total of 5 of these in the living room. All need shades asap.

Endless Possibilities (and maybe that's the problem)

Friends, fellow designers, and the like....I am in a pickle. See, I have this blog which (surprise, surprise) people actually read and yet I fail to post the most pertinent things. Things that are fun and would be splashed all over the pages of other decor blogs....things that I frankly love, but am too busy (hello, fall shopping takes time) to post. So, without further ado I'll let you in on a little secret. I moved to a new house earlier this month, and I am struggling to get it together. I need furniture, I need lighting, I need a rug.....I need a plan!

What you see above is a corner of my living room (hello, windows!) It still pretty much looks that way, after 3 weeks of living in the house. I mean, there is bubble wrap in my living room. I am upset. Since we can't always show the projects we work on here, I decided to take this opportunity and let you in on the process of furnishing a house for real - with no sponsored or donated furnishings, a real budget, behind the scenes decisions (and panic), and the idea that finding the right piece is worth the wait.

To some of you, this is not news...but I wanted to let everyone know that Zoe is not well, and we are not sure how much longer she'll be with us. Two weeks ago I found out that she has cancer, and for a dog who is nearly 15 that is really terrible news. There is not much they can do for her, and the medication they put her on to make her feel better actually ended up making her feel worse. So, she's off all medication and we're just going a day at a time. Please send all of your warm thoughts and good wishes to her right now, she really needs them.

If you follow this blog at all, you might notice a pattern over the last 3 years. During the holidays, TC and I like to get out of town. I mean really get out of town. This year is no exception, and we're hitting the road to Morocco on Christmas morning! We'll be in Marrakech for 5 days, and then fly to Amsterdam for 3 days....a quick trip, but long enough to feel the 80 degree sunshine in Morocco and the snow in Amsterdam. And hopefully find a few treasures along the way!

I predict photos of camels and sunshine will appear on this blog very soon....until then, wishing all of you a very happy holiday season, and a very Happy New Year!

so yeah, it's been a while since i posted anything....things have been insanely busy at the shop with new clients, new orders, and a few really wonderful projects. things have been good, great even, but you know how sometimes it feels like the sidewalk is tilted just a little bit and even though you can't put your finger on it something is just off? yeah, that's pretty much how it' s been for me lately. just a little off. maybe i need a cupcake. regardless, here's the latest and greatest....all the news at the maison.

zoe bear turned 14 last sunday...iiiiiii know! amazing, right? she is and has always been the perfect doggie. 3 days ago we went into mud bay (a seattle pet shop) to get her a new snazzy bed, and she wasn't having it AT ALL. she stood by the door looking outside and refused to try any of the beds, and refused any treats that were offered as bribery (highly unusual). sigh....persnickety much, zoe? jeez. whatever, i win! (how cute is she in her new donut bed!?!)

also, in seattle we have had two seasons here this year - extreme winter, and construction. every where you go in seattle roads are torn to shreds, and it's so LOUD. i really hate it. this morning i was driving to work and noticed a group of bad ass looking construction guys standing around in a circle and being my cynical (before coffee) self i thought 'oh, no wonder it takes so long to pave the roads!' but guess what they were doing? no, really....guess. THEY WERE PLAYING ROCK-PAPER-SCISSORS. i am not even joking. our tax dollars are hard at work people, hard at work.

BadReindeer: oh yeah, that one is 4'x2'. (okay, let me just interject here - the table in the photo was HUGE, no way it was 4'x2')

me: oh, darn - it's too small. thanks anyway! (we go back and forth a few times about the size of the table, etc...BadReindeer (!?!) assures me the photo of the table is in fact 4'x2')

The One Day Makeover

Here at the Maison, we do many things. We design beautiful rooms, re-upholster vintage furnishings to give them a new lovely life, source wonderful products from around the world, we stage our clients homes for photo shoots and real estate listings, we do projects on a shoestring budget and on a big budget....yes, we really do it all.

One other thing we do, that doesn't get a lot of press, until now, is what I've referred to as 'The One Day Makeover". Ringing any bells? Yes? Okay, House Beautiful featured a "One Day Makeover" in their latest issue which made me think...'oh my gosh, we've been doing this THE ENTIRE TIME!' So, yeah...we do that, too!

How does it work? Here's the scoop:

First, we make an appt. to visit and take a peek at the room(s) in question. We might take a few photos, make a few notes, ask a few questions about what you hope to achieve in the space. This meeting usually lasts 20-30 minutes.

Second, we arrive on the morning of the One Day Makeover around 9:00am, and spend the entire day making your room(s) look amazing and fresh with...wait for it...things you ALREADY OWN. Can you stand it? And if by chance you happen to need a few accessories to update your look, we've got you covered there as well (we're also excellent shoppers, and not just in our own store thank you!)

Finally, you come home a little later in the day and jump for joy because your room(s) look insanely beautiful, and fresh, and clean and organized....just how you always imagined it could be!

AMAZING.

The most beautiful antique portrait we've had in the shop yet! Original oil on canvas, dated 1880, signed by the artist 'Dugece'. I believe the origin is Spanish, but can't confirm...it's just a hunch, but isn't she gorgeous? As shown in gilt frame (does not appear to be original although is very old, but judge for yourself...see photos below) and in excellent condition.

Because I'm always thinking of you (really! I am!) I wanted to share this with you: the most beautiful apartment rentals that I've ever found in Paris, Provence, or Tuscany: Haven in Paris. These stunning apartment homes are rented by the week, maybe less if you ask nicely, and are insanely gorgeous...and by Paris standards, affordable! And the best part of all, for design nerds like me, on each apartments discription page there is an actual floor plan with furnture! Amazing. or, as the French say, Voila!

Today, I painted the glossy white trim around the bathroom door. Sounds very exciting, I know. But what I've found is that life is in the details, and that everything looks 100% better with a fresh coat of white lacquer on it. Also today, 2 clients came by the new shop unexpectedly because they saw our lights on - I don't know why, but this still amazes me. I opened the door, paint brush in hand, and looked out to see 2 hopeful faces who looked right past me and said "oh, the windows!" You can't wait for us to re-open, you say? Seriously? Wow! People call and email every day, wondering when we're re-opening...and still, I am shocked....it means the world to me that after being on hiatus for 3 months, you haven't forgotten us. Thank you!!

So, the real news today is this: we are opening next week. As in day after tomorrow. A soft opening, if you will...we still have unpacking to do, fabric samples to sort out and pictures to hang, but I can't wait to see all of you a moment longer! I'll post the big announcement when it's official (ie: phone is plugged in and internet is working), but if you are in the neighborhood and see our lights on, please come on in. Say hello, admire the amazing light pouring through the even more amazing windows. I can't wait to see you!

you are kicking my behind, dear february. i've been fighting a cold for the best part of last week and on friday it finally won...i am out. i give in. uncle. i've watched 2 full seasons of The Tudors, a full season of Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations, and read the last Domino cover to cover...twice. i am bored. and sick, but mostly bored.

tc, ever the knight in shining armor, showed up yesterday with a dozen roses, soup, juice, movies, croissant and baguette from Bakery Nouveau, and a huge box of Kleenex....romance with a red nose, seattle style.

we'll get back to regular postings of inspiration and whatnot next week, but for now i'm back on the sofa with the next episode of No Reservations: Argentina. happy sunday everyone...peace out.

a day in the life

behind the scenes, take one:

i have had insomnia my entire life, as long as i can remember. when i was little, i used to wake up in the middle of the night and try to read by the light of my nightlight, or the moon if i could. now, i wake up and wander around the house with tea in hand, maybe peanut butter toast, and just wait for the sun to come up. sometimes i read, most often i listen to zoe snore and envy her doggie sleep. so, generally speaking, i am always in want of a nap. and a loud alarm clock, because when i finally do go back to sleep i am OUT.

also, i am in need of glasses....there, i said it. for example, when i stand in line at the movies, i cannot read the list that's up there on the wall with the movies & times on it. i can't read the menu on any chalkboard in town, ever. unless i am 2 feet away. i am not joking, it's bad. my friends ask me 'how do you drive?!?' and i say 'i know where i'm going' ....god, i just admitted that. i am making an appt. this week to get contacts...maybe glasses, but for sure contacts. and pretty soon, when i say 'see you later!' you'll know i'm not lying to you.

and, why i am telling you this, i do not know....i am addicted to j.crew shoes and cardigans. i recently picked up 3 cardigans in one day at the 'after christmas, all our clothes are 80% off' sale' and i felt kind of ill with excitement. so wrong, on many levels....but it's true. ill from cardigan overload....only me.

I wasn't sure if posting anything related to the Domino demise was relevant...I mean, every single blog this week has been flooded with comments related to this shocking news. Even if you had a love/hate relationship with Domino (which I did) it's still sad to see another decor magazine go down. Sad, in fact, that Domino's sister publication Lucky did not go first!

Anyway, thoughts this afternoon turned to other things decor & fashion related. Here in Seattle it's been very, very difficult for some retailers to make their businesses GO lately. At Maison Luxe, we are fortunate enough to move into a gorgeous new space which will be a tremendous resource to our clients and a benefit to us as a business, but others have not been so lucky. I've watched as friends have closed up shop, and have been forced to reduce their profits to nothing just to pay the rent and pray for better times. As we wait it out, fingers crossed that better times are just around the corner, I just wanted to say to all of you....shop local when you can. I fear the day when our options are reduced to Pottery Barn and the Gap. God forbid!

when i first started this blog, it was a dark & rainy day...i remember it well, i was standing at the counter in our old shop location. i thought it would be a fun way to show the 'behind the scenes' at the shop and also talk about what life is like for a (then) 32 year old single girl who owns a shop, a dog, and a whole pile of fabric samples. sounds interesting, right? well, i think the blog and i had a little seperation this past, oh, 2 years, and we weren't really on the same page. i wanted to write about what i was up to 'behind the scenes' but wasn't sure it was all that....interesting? unique? did anyone care? furthermore, was anyone even reading? would you laugh and point at me if i posted a photo of the dress i wanted to buy to wear in paris? no? really??

today, i decided that it's okay if only 11 people read this blog. it's my blog, and i'll gossip if i want to. life is not all about the lamps and fabric...it's really not. there is a lot more to talk about. shall we?

on sunday, january 25th, i turned 35. i know, a lot of people are 35. but i wasn't before and now i am. it's sort of earth shattering, in many tiny ways. little earthquakes, if you will. it's okay, i feel fine. I FEEL FINE.

recently i was having dinner with a friend who is my age, her husband, and her 2 adorable blonde daughters, in their beautiful 6000 square foot home. i found my mind wandering....thinking "it's okay that i don't have any of this, right?" no husband, no blonde daughter, no beautiful house (well, my house is pretty cute....) and i am 35. thirty fucking five.

the conversation turned to a woman we know who is OBSESSED with what other people have vs. what she has. this is a woman who lives in a beautiful 1.5 million dollar home, yet she lusts after homes in other neighborhoods that cost 3 million dollars. she follows her childrens friends home from school to see if their homes are bigger/better than hers. she has 3 gorgeous children, does not work, has a nanny, and her husband (as far as we can tell) is totally devoted to her. however, it seems that nothing is ever good enough. which led me to think....you know, so what if i don't have a million dollar house, or an adoring husband, or blonde children. it's okay, right? but if i ever get them, i promise to not ask for more than that.

Deyrolle

A wonderous shop, full of the most exquisite taxidermy you have ever seen! Located at 46 Rue de Bac, on the Left Bank, Deyrolle is a MUST VISIT while in Paris. I was overwhelmed with the urge to buy something, anything! Alas, I did not, only because those meanies in US Customs would not let me bring in a taxidermied lion. Why not?!?

Tragically, in February 2008 a fire destroyed many of the animals and the interior spaces at Deyrolle. Visiting today you can still see the damage on the exterior of the building, which is slowly being renovated. Amazingly, they have done an astounding job of recreating the shop and have acquired many new animals.

The main room at Deyrolle is now filled once again with the most exquisite butterflies, moths, birds, shells, antique zebra hides, snake skeletons (!) and fossils. Best of all was the enormous giraffe they have guarding the entire room!

These birds were so, so beautiful. And ready to go home with you, should you be lucky enough to have an apartment in Paris!

Versailles: Go in the Spring

The day I went to Versailles it was cold in Paris. Really cold. And yet, I had my heart set on going, so I bundled up in 3 layers, scarf, umbrella (no hat, damn!) and hit the train station...TC even walked me to the station for a proper 'bon voyage' send off. I was so excited...until I realized I was on the wrong train! Le sigh. I should have taken this as a sign of things to come, but did not....so, once on the correct train after a quick switch, off I was again. And finally, I arrive. Its' not that I expected Marie Antoinette to greet me with tea and macarons when I arrived, but I was not expecting what I did see....

I didn't photograph it because it was just too insane. There were THOUSANDS of people there waiting to get in at the front gates. A four hour wait they said. And then, it started to rain...rain mixed with snow. Boo! I hate lines, crowds, pushing, etc...I was almost sorry I came. I decided to skip the lines and head for the gardens instead. I'm so smart. And guess what? Every single garden statue was covered in a giant green tarp. My heart sank.

And then it began to snow. And it was freezing. Please notice, all the water in the fountains is completely frozen over. I thought that was a nice touch.

This statue sums up how I was feeling: 'are you kidding me?'

When the bird landed on her head, I actually did laugh out loud....like we're both thinking that this is not what either of us had in mind when we came to Versailles.

LE SIGH.

TC & I are flying to Paris on Christmas Eve, and staying through the New Year. We, obviously, cannot wait to get there! Above is a photo of our apartment in the Montmartre district...le sigh.

Anyway, first things first....Happy Holidays to all of you, dear ones! I miss seeing all of you at the shop, and it breaks my heart a little bit when I drive by the old shop location and see the lights off....but, I'm beyond excited to get settled into the new space in January (did you notice, everyone voted for #2?) and have you all over for le grande fette to celebrate!

So, this is it....the final post, written at the counter at 1123 1st ave.

I thought I would be sad to move out of this long, skinny, rediculously gorgeous space....but you know? not so much. I'm looking forward to seeing the view from the other side of the counter for a while. A break. A re-entry into the world of the shopper instead of the shop keeper. Just for a little while. I'm most excited to see all of you at the new location, which will be determined by the most mathematical and logical way I know....i'm not going to lie, decisions happen best when made surrounded by friends and empty bottles of wine. So, if you have a vote on the new location now is your chance to weigh in. Madison Park? Capital Hill? Downtown? Pioneer Square? Let me know what you think.

I also wanted to say a huge 'thank you' to everyone who started out as a customer and became a friend, to everyone who came to the holiday parties & drank the wine, to everyone who adopted a shelter dog during the annual 'adopt a dog day', to everyone who gave zoe a cookie and didn't mind when she barked. thanks to all of you!!
